Mathieu Santos – “Silly Thoughts (Balam Acab Remix)”
Balam Acab remixed a song from Ra Ra Riot bassist Mathieu Santos’s solo debut Massachusetts 2010. Asmentioned previously, Alec Koone is a patient, precise composer, so it’s interesting to give a close listen to what he decided to retain, shift, or implode — that in mind, we have Santos’s original along with Balam’s tweak. (Hint: You might want to repaint the above album art black and blue.)

Skylines - Slow Down
Loving more of this positive "healing" club music from Skylines, an outfit comprised ofParty Trash, Raw Moans and Top Girls who we were first drawn to back in January. Opening with soft and ultra tender R&B vocal warbles this new track becomes illuminated by bright synth arpeggios and edges into some kind of lush, Boyz II Men harmonic club zone. COMPUTER DREAMS – COMPUTER DREAMS [FREE ALBUM]
Based on name alone Computer Dreams aka Midnight Television reminds me of Memory Tapes aka Memory Cassette aka Weird Tapes. When it comes to the music, it reminds me more of something that could have been playing in the background over Ariel Pink’s songs on his album Worn Copy. Computer Dreams’ self-titled album has that classic B-movie soundtrack feel that I never tire of, full of what sounds like filtered samples of things that seem like children of the era when getting your tape destroyed by your ghetto blaster was a legitimate concern.

Toro Y Moi drops new EP cover art and track….
Carpark will release indie darling, Toro Y Moi's new EP on September 13th. The artwork above was recently lobbed to the masses, along with a cover of Alexander O'Neal and Cherelle's "Saturday Love." You can head over to Chaz Bundick's website and purchase his prior release, Underneath the Pine if you haven't yet, and while you're there, check out some information on the EP. According to the initial post at Pitchfork, he'll be unveiling some of the orginal material from the EP at the festival this weekend. This particular cover track doesn't stray too far from Toro Y Moi's funky trademark of electro beats and flowering synths.

JESSE BOYKINS III – WAY OF A WAYFARER [EP]
Whether he is rocking as a solo artist or fleshing out a track vocally with the likes ofTheophilus London and the Foreign Exchange, I have pretty much loved everything Jesse Boykins III has done over the past few years. So it’s great to see that media/fashion outfits such as SoulCulture, Street Etiquette, Passport Life and GFCnewyork have all backed the crooner’s latest free project, the Way of a Wayfarer EP. Hopefully these cosigns will lead to widespread recognition for Boykins, whose talent goes beyond mere soul/lover-man antics. He is flaunting some strong songwriting on the EP, particularly on cuts like the experimental “Light To Dark” and pulsing “I Can’t Stay”.

June was a difficult month as I was traveling for personal reasons and at times it was hard to really hammer out some posts. With that said, all that is behind me and I dedicate this post to everyone that didn’t quite have the time to catch up on some new music. 18 CARAT AFFAIR – GORGEOUS FANTASY [ALBUM]
I sang the praises of 18 Carat Affair about a month ago and now I have another reason to. Denys Parker just released his new project under the 18 Carat Affair name, Gorgeous Fantasy, and the music still sounds nothing like his home base of Kansas City, Mo. More smooth R&B samples and static. It’s what would be playing in a commercial for a Billy Dee Williams endorsed codeine beverage.

Gang Gang Dance – “Mindkilla (Lee “Scratch” Perry Remix)”

On this new remix by rocksteady/reggae legend Lee “Scratch” Perry, of course, the Bollywoodisms are filtered out. Which is cool, because it is fun to hear masters re-imagine songs by eliminating a definining elemenet and replacing it with their own sensibility. For Lee, that’s some skanking rhythms and his inimitable voice pairing up with Lizzi’s. Which makes sense, since the reggae and dub stylings Perry helped pioneer certainly made their way into other corners of the Gang Gang blueprint.
