CHARLIE SMARTS – “POSTCARDS” F. TAB-ONE



Kooley High‘s Charlie Smarts joins Tab-One on “Postcards”, a leak from his upcoming album LowBottomMe. Dropping on July 11, it’s an eight-track tour of North Carolina with an appearance by Rapper Big Pooh. Smarts has worked with 9th Wonder and “Postcards” producer Marshall Law, another native of North Carolina, sounds like he’s from the same arena.  It has smooth samples as the Kooley High kid says, “I’m gravy, I’m gravy,” and he’s right. The track is gravy. On “Postcards”, taste what Raleigh has been cooking up. You might get hooked. And if you do, look out for Monday’s release.

How To Dress Well - Suicide Dream 3 (Orchestral Version)



How To Dress Well, the solo project of Tom Krell, went from a mysterious blogspot dropping transcendent EPs to one of the more hyped campaigns in underground music last year. While much of that work was shrouded in a deliberate fuzz and distortion that obscured Krell's falsetto from clarity, the deceased friend-dedicated "Suicide Dream 3 (Orchestral Version)" feels positively naked. Backed by an emotive, minor-key string quartet, this one-off puts How To Dress Well in a classical light. The track is part of the new Just Once -- a 1,000-copy limited edition 10-inch with $1 of each sale going toMindFreedom International mental health charities. JESSE BOYKINS III – WAY OF A WAYFARER [EP]



Whether he is rocking as a solo artist or fleshing out a track vocally with the likes ofTheophilus London and the Foreign Exchange, I have pretty much loved everything Jesse Boykins III has done over the past few years. So it’s great to see that media/fashion outfits such as SoulCulture, Street Etiquette, Passport Life and GFCnewyork have all backed the crooner’s latest free project, the Way of a Wayfarer EP. Hopefully these cosigns will lead to widespread recognition for Boykins, whose talent goes beyond mere soul/lover-man antics. He is flaunting some strong songwriting on the EP, particularly on cuts like the experimental “Light To Dark” and pulsing “I Can’t Stay”.

Dunes – 3 songs

Last month we highlighted Bleached, the duo of Jessica and Jennifer Clavin. The sisters’ former Mika Miko bandmate-turned-director Kate Hall has a newish musical project as well called Dunes. The low-key lo-fi LA trio, which also features Stephanie Chan and Mark Greshowak, follows up last year’s self-titled EP (Mexican Summer) and “Old Souls” 7″ (Art Fag) with the woozy post-punk single “Tied Together,” a tune that will appeal to fans of Puro Instinct. 夜のニュースをボヤっと見ていたら、窓の外に激しくたたきつける雨の音。慌てて階上に走り、開け放しておいた窓を閉めてみたりする。
いや、普段はこんなことでは立ち上がりもしないレイジーなワタシだが、何しろ一昨日は我が家の駐車場が突然の雨で水没という事件あり、さすがに神経質になっているのだった。この調子で降り続けるなら、寝る前に一回、見回りに行ってみるべきかも知れない。
