POTHOLES PODCAST (JUNE 2011)

We were a day or two late on the past few Podcasts, so I made absolutely sure I dropped this sucker on time, and with over 1.5 hours of music! Kicking off with Nas’s “Nasty”, a furious example of hip-hop at its finest, this mix flies through everything from James Blake to Waka Flocka Flame. 26 songs in total, there was very little from this past month left out on this Podcast. What can I say? June absolutely kicked ass!

Givers: June 18, 2011 Backyard Brunch Sessions

Before heading over to McCarren Park a few Saturdays ago to catch Guided By Voices and others on the Northside Festivalmain stage, I had the privilege of catching the inaugural show of the 2011 Backyard Brunch Sessions, starring Lafayette, LA’s Givers.  With their good attitudes and laid back vibe, I liked this band before hearing a note of their music.

Laura Marling – A Creature I Don’t Know

British folk sensation, Laura Marling has unveiled details of her third album ‘A Creature I Don’t Know’ which is set to be released on 12th of September. It follows the success of her Mercury nominated sophomore record ‘I Speak Because I Can’, a dark and thoughtful masterpiece that was without doubt one of my favourite records of 2010.

Youth Lagoon debut album coming soon

Boise, ID-based Trevor Powers aka Youth Lagoon spent the last year in his bedroom recording what would become his debut full length (appropriately titled) The Year of Hibernation. The result is an exposed, personal 8-song opus with sweeping falsettos and post-rock builds that fall somewhere between The Antlers' Hospice and Bon Iver'sFor Emma. Trevor's friend Erik Eastman provided guitar on the album and is also currently performing live with him. Bass was provided by his friend Trevor Schultz and production/engineering by Jeremy Park.

Memoryhouse – “Modern, Normal”

Memoryhouse’s The Years EP is getting re-recorded, re-mixed, re-mastered, and re-released via the estimable Sub Pop label, and it is compliments of that organization that the Ontario duo set forth the newly added “Modern, Normal.” They are still intensely chill, shooting dreamy reverbed vocals through amniotic effects. Key evocative lyrics: “longing,” “cascading,” “sleeping,” “ah-ah-ah-ah.” Key mood for consumption: doe-eyed and romantic, looking for a candle.

GIRAFFAGE – PRETTY THINGS [EP]

Is it getting chilly in here? Oh, no, that’s just me attempting to squeeze in another reference to that one particular genre of electronic music without actually saying it. Unsurprisingly, this “chill” music comes from a man in San Francisco (a kinda “chill” place) named Charlie Yin who makes music under the name Giraffage. Giraffage’s Pretty Things EP doesn’t fit all the criteria of that “chill” genre, it seems to have a some more energy than the typical Homer-Simpson-in-a-150-pound-20-something-male’s-body vibe that a lot of that “chill” music seems to have at times. It works though, show off your musical beach body, EP! You earned it.

Davinci, “Pangea” MP3

As a warm up for his forthcoming Feast Or Famine EP, SF spitter Davinci goes left, pulling a Ghostface entire-track beat jack move on Dexter Wansel’s so-futuristic fusion classic “Rings Of Saturn.” He even steps into Wansel’s Life On Mars artwork for his own cover.

18 CARAT AFFAIR – GORGEOUS FANTASY [ALBUM]

I sang the praises of 18 Carat Affair about a month ago and now I have another reason to. Denys Parker just released his new project under the 18 Carat Affair name, Gorgeous Fantasy, and the music still sounds nothing like his home base of Kansas City, Mo. More smooth R&B samples and static. It’s what would be playing in a commercial for a Billy Dee Williams endorsed codeine beverage.

Razika, “Eg Vetsje”

Razika are from Norway, a country that is famous for black metal. Razika are not Black metal. In fact, they’re light and bubbly, a sunnier, poppier take on post-punk like Kleenex/LiLiPUT or Swell Maps. Not that they sound redundant—we need great pop rock like this. It’s infinitely listenable.

Shivering Timbers

One of the best weekday shows I've seen all year happened a few months ago when I caught Akron'sShivering Timbers at The Beachland Tavern on a Monday or Tuesday.  The husband/wife duo was without a drummer, and because it was a Monday, I was without a beer in hand.  It was neither here nor there, however, because the stripped model of the band is just as intriguing as the recorded version (with drummer).
