Gang Gang Dance – “Mindkilla (Lee “Scratch” Perry Remix)”

stereogum.com
On this new remix by rocksteady/reggae legend Lee “Scratch” Perry, of course, the Bollywoodisms are filtered out. Which is cool, because it is fun to hear masters re-imagine songs by eliminating a definining elemenet and replacing it with their own sensibility. For Lee, that’s some skanking rhythms and his inimitable voice pairing up with Lizzi’s. Which makes sense, since the reggae and dub stylings Perry helped pioneer certainly made their way into other corners of the Gang Gang blueprint. Have a listen at MySpace, download the original “Mindkilla” below, and spend some time with Eye Contact.

A BETTER LIFE

Titled “A Better Life,” the film revolves around Carlos, an undocumented gardener whose hopes for building a landscaping business – and the means with which to provide a better life for his teenage son – are pinned on the purchase of a used pickup truck. When the truck is stolen, he finds himself in a familiar predicament: A call to police, the norm for anyone else, could be risky. He doesn’t call, and the film follows father and son as they search for their stolen livelihood.

CHROME SPARKS – “HEART AND SOUL”

While Chrome Sparks’s latest single “Heart and Soul” starts out quite awkwardly with off kilter drum hits and the like, everything comes together perfectly as soon as the vocal samples kick in. This track serves as my introduction to Chrome Sparks, but his vast soundscape right here is the mark of a rather talented musician.

Jonti, “Firework Spraying Moon”

“Firework Spraying Moon” sounds kind of like whatever firework spraying moon might be, little spare sound pieces flipping by and lighting the track, jittery riffs from indeterminate instruments bought on the side of the road. Taken from Jonti‘s upcoming debut Twirligig, out this fall on Stones Throw, “Moon” sets the bar high for the South African/Australian, suggesting shades of a more beat-centric Brian Wilson.

Bleached, “Think of You”

Sisters Jessica and Jennifer Clavin—formerly of Los Angeles based girl (and one boy)-band Mika Miko—have returned as Bleached. “Think of You” sounds like The Misfits and says something that sounds small but is actually big: that it’s scary to tell a boy that you love him because it’s hard—probably impossible in the long run—to guarantee that affection is mutual. It does this in less than three minutes, and when it’s over, you immediately want to relearn the lesson.

Com Truise “Brokendate” Free mp3

In honor of having to bump up his album’s digital release date due to some shady internet shenanigans, Com Truise has opted to also give away the aptly titled track, “Brokendate.” Luckily, he hasn’t broken any of our dreams of what a Com Truise LP might sound like. Take this for keeps, and stream the album in its entirety over at Hype MachineGalactic Melt will still be in stores July 5th.
